Wagering Requirements Explained

A wagering requirement (playthrough, WR) is the number of times you must bet your bonus before you can withdraw it. “50 free spins, 35x wagering” sounds generous — until you do the math.

How it works

If a $10 bonus has a 35x wagering requirement, you must wager $350 (35 × $10) before the bonus money becomes withdrawable. On a slot with a ~5% house edge, you’ll lose roughly $17.50 of that $350 on the way through — more than the bonus is worth.

The formula

Expected value (EV) = bonus − (wagering × bonus × house edge)

For a $10 bonus, 35x WR, 5% edge:

EV = $10 − (35 × $10 × 0.05) = $10 − $17.50 = −$7.50

That’s a negative EV bonus — on average, it costs you money to complete it.

When bonuses are actually worth claiming

• No wagering requirement (0x) — the real free money. Pure bonus, no strings.
• Low WR (1x–10x) on a small bonus — usually fine, sometimes positive EV.
• 35x+ on a large “free” amount — almost always negative EV. Skip it.
